When I started gaming, that shit could and did happen - often.
I grew up with a sense of digital impermanence. If your Xbox account gets the banhammer, say goodbye to your 'cheevos. If your WoW account gets permabanned, all your items and gold vanish into a black hole. If someone deletes your save file, you literally have nothing to show for your hard work except what you've learned from the experience. At the end of the day, when you flip off the gameboy or close the laptop, all your hard work is just so many bits stored in memory. Studies claim two hours of gaming is enough to receive peak benefits to creativity, relaxation, etc. Gaming has very little 'productive' real world value. Third, I want to point out that you're absolutely right. I started playing League of Legends and I am definitely better at many other types of games, including stuff in real life, because I have learned different ways of looking at tactics and analyzing my opponent's behavior. I've played dumb flash games that blew my mind because they expressed simple yet powerful ideas. You could buy $60 worth of indie games and you'd have 20x the gameplay 'experience'. There are tons and tons of games out there.

It's like watching a movie twice to catch the stuff you missed the first time. If I only get 42% completion, I can look up the parts I missed, find out if there are other endings, and do better on a second, faster playthrough. I am generally anti-cheat anti-guide, and I will play through every game start-to-finish at least once without looking up anything. My first suggestion is to dissociate yourself from a completionist mentality.
This is how people get burned out on genres as well - after the industry copies a particular style or mechanic enough, I get tired of seeing it because it's not new or novel. You've reached the limits of the game's ability to expand your horizons. When you grind on a game, you're eventually going to reach a plateau where you're no longer extracting 'new' information. Sometimes I'm done with a game in five minutes, other games I still play if I feel they hone a particular skill. When I feel like I've exhausted a game's value, I switch to a new game. I try to consciously extract something valuable from every game I play. Stuff like that is what makes some of the best memories in games.
Hell I have played my main for over 90 hours and I'm not even close to max level yet (partly because I don't care for the whole "must min max and rush to max level" bullshit in MMOs, but also because GW2 has a tonne of atmospheric content). It was very chill and friendly, and there is a lot of stuff you can goof off with in GW2 (a lot of jumping puzzles and cool locations to find and chill out in). Some people had already been on there for hours and were still there when I went to bed. No, nothing really happens regardless of what you do, but I spent four hours last night just dumping water on King Willy (our server named the whales Willy and Jonah) and chatting with other players (and browsing reddit of course :D). Yesterday morning Arena Net added a couple of live beached whales to Lion's Arch (main hub city) and buckets of water next to them. There was some thought about removing titles to make room for others, but each of these titles tells a tale too magical to leave out.Or hell even finding unusual things to do in games (especially in more open world games like Guild Wars 2).

Of course, that's only when these narratives are placed into the hands of talented and capable visionaries that understand how to utilize the many tools gaming has. The way games interact with their audiences creates a bond that is stronger than purely literary bonds. Updated on October 29th, 2021 by Hodey Johns: Since this list was first released, great games kept coming and even more great games were being discovered. These are the stories that have gripped us won't let go. For this list, we have avoided the games that have more story than gameplay, and instead focused on those with excellent stories that are also mechanically strong and well-designed experiences. Some gamers only play games for their story they want an interactive narrative that they can be a part of and be whisked away by.
